I can't basically explain the message of this song.. But I guess this one commented by An Anonymous explains it..
1) I think this song is about a guy who is in love with a girl.
2) Because he is in love with this girl he has made many sacrifices to impress/please her even to the point of changing his personality and actions ("I tried to be perfect").
3)Finally, he realizes that he is just not being himself ("I don't believe it makes me real"). And decides to break up.
4)However, you can tell that this girl is someone he really cares about because of the way he decides to end the relationship. He dosn't want to be subtle and straight to the point to avoid hurting the girl's feelings. Instead, he'd rather go on and on with the conversation ("I'd say all the words that I know") until she slowly realizes that he is trying to break up with her ("just to see if it would show - that i'm trying to let you know - that i'm better off on my own")
5)I also think that although he is the one making the decision he is feeling sad too because of the softness of the song.
